Why I Built This
My name is Simon Desjardins-Hogue. I'm a developer based in Montreal, Quebec, and I've spent the last few years building tools that help people protect their privacy and security online.
In 2023 and 2024, I watched AI-generated content explode. Suddenly, my social feeds were full of images that looked real but weren't. Articles that read fine but said nothing original. Videos where someone's face had been swapped onto another body. It was getting harder — fast — to trust what I was seeing online.
I was already running viepriveemondroit.com (a French-language privacy education site) and privacytool.ai, so I understood how much people value tools that respect their data. When I looked at the existing AI detectors on the market, most of them required you to upload your content to their servers. That felt wrong to me. You shouldn't have to give up your privacy to verify someone else's authenticity.
So I built LooksFake AI with one hard rule: your content stays on your device, period. The entire analysis runs locally in your browser. No uploads, no server-side processing, no data collection. I also made a deliberate choice to use heuristic analysis — pattern matching, statistical indicators, metadata inspection — instead of a black-box AI model. That way, you can see exactly which indicators triggered and why something was flagged, instead of getting a mystery percentage from an opaque algorithm.
What Makes LooksFake AI Different

All analysis runs locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or tracked. I built this tool the way I'd want to use it — without having to trust a third party with my content.

Every result shows you exactly which indicators were triggered and why. No hidden scores, no mysterious confidence percentages from a model you can't inspect. You see what I see.

I believe detection tools are too important to lock behind a paywall. LooksFake AI is free, and it will stay that way. The site is supported by ads, not by selling your data.

I don't just tell you "this is probably AI-generated." I teach you how to spot the patterns yourself. The goal is to make you better at critical evaluation, not dependent on my tool.
How Detection Works
LooksFake AI uses heuristic analysis across three content types. Here's a brief overview — for more details, see the detection guide.
- Text analysis: I measure perplexity (how predictable word choices are), burstiness (variation in sentence length and complexity), lexical diversity, the presence of AI-typical phrases, and sentence structure uniformity. Human writing is messy and varied; AI writing tends to be suspiciously smooth.
- Image analysis: The tool inspects EXIF metadata for AI generator signatures, checks filename patterns against 20+ known AI tools (Midjourney, DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, etc.), analyzes pixel-level noise uniformity, and examines edge regularity in fine details like hair, fingers, and text.
- Video analysis: I look at temporal frame consistency (AI videos often have subtle flickering between frames), facial artifacts typical of deepfakes (unnatural blinking, jaw movement glitches, skin texture discontinuities), and metadata signatures from AI video generators.
An honest note about limitations
No detection tool is perfect — mine included. AI generation is improving constantly, and heuristic analysis will always have false positives and false negatives. I designed LooksFake AI to give you informed signals, not definitive verdicts. Think of it as a second pair of eyes, not a judge.

Pourquoi j'ai créé cet outil
Je m'appelle Simon Desjardins-Hogue. Je suis développeur à Montréal et je bâtis des outils qui aident les gens à protéger leur vie privée en ligne.
En 2023-2024, l'explosion du contenu généré par IA m'a frappé de plein fouet. Images truquées sur les réseaux sociaux, articles creux mais bien écrits, vidéos deepfake — distinguer le vrai du faux devenait un vrai défi au quotidien. Je gérais déjà viepriveemondroit.com et privacytool.ai, et je voyais bien que les gens voulaient des outils qui respectent leurs données.
Les détecteurs existants exigeaient tous de téléverser son contenu sur leurs serveurs. Ça me dérangeait. J'ai donc construit LooksFake AI avec une règle simple : votre contenu reste sur votre appareil. L'analyse est heuristique — pas une boîte noire — pour que vous puissiez comprendre pourquoi quelque chose est signalé.

Comment fonctionne la détection
LooksFake AI utilise l'analyse heuristique sur trois types de contenu. Pour plus de détails, consultez le guide de détection.
- Texte : Perplexité, « burstiness », diversité lexicale, expressions typiques de l'IA et uniformité de la structure des phrases.
- Images : Métadonnées EXIF, noms de fichiers de 20+ outils IA, uniformité du bruit pixel et régularité des contours.
- Vidéo : Cohérence temporelle entre les images, artefacts faciaux de deepfakes et signatures de métadonnées des générateurs vidéo IA.
Note d'honnêteté
Aucun outil de détection n'est parfait, le mien inclus. L'IA progresse constamment. LooksFake AI vous donne des signaux éclairés, pas des verdicts absolus.
